What is Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil? What Does CBD Oil do?

What is CBD oil?

Derived from the stalk and seed of cannabis (hemp) plants, cannabidiol (CBD) oil or CBD hemp oil is a natural botanical concentrate that is high in the compound CBD. Of the more than 85 cannabinoids so far identified in the cannabis plant, CBD is the second most common after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychotropic and therefore doesn’t cause a euphoric high.

CBD hemp oil is extracted from the cannabis varieties that are naturally abundant in CBD, and low in THC. A specialized extraction process is used to yield highly concentrated CBD oil that also contains other nutritious material such as omega-3 fatty acids, terpenes, vitamins, chlorophyll, amino acids, and other phytocannabinoids like cannabichromene (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN) and cannabidivarin (CBCV).

Pure hemp cannabidiol oil can be consumed directly as a nutritional supplement. Over the years, great advances in CBD hemp oil product development have led to what are now dozens of different types of CBD hemp oil products, including tablets, drops, and even gummies. Concentrated CBD Hemp oil can also be infused into skin and body care products used as topicals.

Top 10 CBD Oil Claimed Benefits List

10.) CBD Relieves Pain

One 2008 review assessed how well CBD works to relieve chronic pain. The review looked at studies conducted between the late 1980s and 2007. Based on those reports, they concluded that CBD was effective in overall pain management without adverse side effects. They also noted that CBD was beneficial in treating insomnia related to chronic pain.

9.) CBD Relieves Anxiety

Brazilian researchers conducted a small double-blind study of patients afflicted with generalized social anxiety. After consuming CBD, participants reported a significant decrease in anxiety. Researchers validated patients’ subjective reports by performing brain scans showing cerebral blood flow patterns consistent with an anti-anxiety effect.

8.) CBD Reduces Inflammation

The other powerful component in cannabis, CBD, has also proven to reduce inflammation and is thought to play a role in the treatment of arthritis symptoms. According to researchers at the Imperial College London, CBD can reduce inflammation in mice by 50% at the right dosage and can fight against type 1 diabetes. Also, research done by G.W.Pharmaceuticals showed that CBD could be used for treating rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, as well as diabetes, bowel disorders, and nausea.

7.) CBD Reduces Vomiting and Nausea

Although annoying, and sometimes detrimental, the biological causes of nausea and vomiting play an important role in the progression of many species. Classified as a defensive action, the sole purpose of this response is to inhibit the digestion of toxic compounds. Since the discovery of the human endocannabinoid system (ECS), researchers have found this complex network of cannabinoid receptor sites plays a direct role in regulating both nausea and vomiting.

6.) CBD Reduces Blood Sugar

In 2013, the results of a five-year study into the effects of cannabis on fasting insulin and insulin resistance(article) were published in the American Journal of Medicine. Of the 4,657 respondents, 2,554 had used cannabis in their lifetime (579 were current users, and 1,975 were past users), and 2,103 had never used the drug.

Researchers found that current users of cannabis had 16% lower fasting insulin levels than respondents who had never used cannabis. As well as having 17% lower levels of insulin resistance and higher levels of HDL-C. Respondents who had used cannabis in their lifetime but were not current users showed similar but less pronounced associations. Which indicates that the protective effect of cannabis fades with time.

5.) CBD Helps the Immune System

If there is an imbalance between cell-mediated and humoral immunity, it results in disease and dysfunction. For example, multiple sclerosis is an example of an autoimmune disease. Thus, the cell-mediated immune system is hyper-activated against the individual’s brain and nervous system—as if it were foreign. Interestingly, the ECS and cannabinoids have been shown to play a key role in “balancing” the various arms and components of the immune system.

4.) CBD Suppresses Muscle Spasms

As evident from the information mentioned above, it can almost be taken for granted that there are multiple different medicinal benefits of CBD which are likely to be utilized in various drugs in the years to come. Thanks to its muscle and vascular relaxant properties, it is highly effective in the patients with inflammatory diseases with pain as a significant feature of it.

3.) CBD Reduces Risk of Artery Blockage

In both animal and human studies, cannabinoids have been found to cause blood vessels to vasodilate, improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure9,20,21. Another study found that marijuana use before a heart attack may improve survival rate while in the hospital. CBD specifically has shown to be a vasodilator, allowing for greater blood flow and reducing the damage to arterial walls and lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke21. This vasodilator effect has been shown to help normalize blood pressure1.

2.) CBD Reduces Seizures and Convulsions

For the study, 120 children and adolescents with Dravet Syndrome between the ages of 2 and 18 years were randomized across 23 sites in the United States and Europe to receive either CBD 20 mg/kg or added to their existing treatment over a 14-week period. Seizure frequency was tracked for one month before the study for baseline readings and during the study.

1.) CBD Promotes Bone Growth

Cannabinoid ligands regulate bone mass, but skeletal effects of cannabis (marijuana and hashish) have not been reported. Bone fractures are highly prevalent, involving prolonged immobilization and discomfort. Here we report that the major non-psychoactive cannabis constituent, cannabidiol (CBD), enhances the biomechanical properties of healing rat mid-femoral fractures.
