THC And CBD Fight Cancer Cells

Later in this reading, there’s a video of Dr. Christina Sanchez, a molecular biologist at Complutense University in Madrid, Spain, precisely describing how THC (psychoactive)  and CBD (non-psychoactive) ultimately kills cancer cells.

The Cannabis plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries. Scientists have identified many biologically active components in Cannabis, called cannabinoids. The two best-studied components are the chemicals delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (commonly known as THC), and cannabidiol (CBD). Though these are the main two, researchers are studying other cannabinoids in the plant as well.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids apply to any group of related compounds in the cannabis plant, for example, cannabinol and the active constituents. They activate the cannabinoid receptors in our body while the body itself creates compounds called endocannabinoids, and they play a significant role in the many processes within our body that help create a lively environment.

Cannabinoids have also been proven to reduce cancer cells as they have an enormous influence on the rebuilding of the immune system. Although not all strain of cannabis has the same effect, more and more cancer patients see success in reduced cancer cells from using cannabis. Clashing with popular beliefs, smoking the plant does not help a great deal of nursing disease within our body as therapeutic levels cannot reach through smoking. Producing oil from the plant or eating the plant is the best way to get the essential ingredients, the cannabinoids.

THC

There are many different compounds in Cannabis that have different actions in the human body. For example, THC is known to cause the “high” feeling reported by users of the Cannabis plant. Users also claim that the plant relieves pain and nausea, reduces inflammation, and can also act as an antioxidant. CBD can help treat seizures, minimize anxiety and paranoia. CBD can also counteract the “high” feeling caused by THC.

Different cultivars (strains or types) and even different crops of marijuana plants can have varying amounts of these and other active compounds. This means that marijuana can have different effects based on the strain used.

The effects of marijuana also vary depending on how marijuana compounds enter the body:

  • When taken by mouth, such as in baked goods, the THC is absorbed poorly and can take hours to be absorbed. Once it’s absorbed, it’s processed by the liver, which produces a second psychoactive compound (a substance that acts on the brain and changes mood or consciousness) that affects the brain differently than THC.
  • When marijuana is smoked or vaporized (inhaled), THC enters the bloodstream and goes to the brain quickly. The second psychoactive compound is produced in small amounts, and so has less effect. The effects of inhaled marijuana fade faster than marijuana taken by mouth.

How can Cannabis affect cancer symptoms

  • Studies have shown smoking cannabis can be helpful in treating nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy.
  • Smoked or vaporized cannabis can be helpful in treating neuropathic pain (pain from damaged nerves).
  • Smoked cannabis can help improve food intake.
  • Clinical trials have shown people who took cannabis extract tended to need less pain medication.
  • Scientists have reported that THC and CBD slow growth and kill certain types of cancer cells in lab dishes.

“There have been some early clinical trials of cannabinoids in treating cancer in humans and more studies are planned. While the studies so far have shown that cannabinoids can be safe in treating cancer, they do not show that they help control or cure the disease.” – American Cancer Society.

Countries around the world are coming together in regards to accepting this plant as a medicine rather than a harmful substance. It’s a plant that could help the planet in more ways than one. Cannabis is not something offered in the same regard as chemotherapy, but more people are becoming aware of it, which is why it’s so important to continue to spread information like this. Nobody can deny the tremendous healing power of this plant (except Jeff Sessions).
